Tavolo Community REDD+ project in Papua New Guinea validated and verified by Verra
We’re pleased to announce that the PNG Communities BEST REDD – Tavolo Project, developed by FORCERT with Technical Support from Face the Future and led by the Tavolo communities, has been officially validated and verified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standard (CCBS), achieving Gold Level for both Community and Climate benefits.
This milestone follows years of close collaboration between FORCERT, the Tavolo Conservation Association, and the Climate Change & Development Authority (CCDA) of Papua New Guinea. Since the project began in 2019, it has built a strong foundation of community engagement, legal innovation, and sustainable land use planning.
The Tavolo project has successfully prevented the planned deforestation of more than 21,000 hectares of tropical rainforest in the Mukus, Tavolo and Lausus village areas. The first carbon credits are now ready for issuance, with a total of 1.7 million VCUs expected over the 30-year project period.
