Más Árboles: Approved by Plan Vivo – a community-led step towards climate and ecosystem restoration
We’re proud to share that the Más Árboles project in Cusco, Peru, has reached a key milestone: the Project Idea Note (PIN) has been approved by Plan Vivo and listed in the PV Climate pipeline — an important step towards certification. This recognition reflects not only the climate ambition of the project, but above all its community-led design and tangible environmental benefits.
Más Árboles brings together 35 rural Andean communities in a collective effort to restore degraded highland landscapes through afforestation, natural regeneration, and sustainable land use practices. The project is rooted in a participatory approach — communities define priorities, co-design interventions, and lead the implementation on their lands.
Environmental impact includes:
• Sequestration of over 1 million tonnes of CO₂
• Restoration of native ecosystems
• Improved soil, water retention, and biodiversity
• Reduced risks of landslides and erosion
Social benefits include:
• Strengthened local governance
• Diversified incomes (e.g. mushroom production, forest jobs)
• Empowerment of women and older adults
• Revitalisation of traditional knowledge and land stewardship through peer learning
